Individual Therapy Services

Adapted Lessons (approx. ages 5+)

Tempo! Music Therapy Services offers adapted lessons on a variety of instruments and voice. Lessons may be anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes weekly and are typically once per week, depending on attention span and needs. A music therapist familiar with adapted teaching concepts will teach the lessons. The therapist will break down skills to smaller tasks for those with special needs.

Adapted lessons focus on teaching musical skills such as musical terms, concepts, proficiency on an instrument, and musical styles, to name a few. Home practice is expected. The students will be assessed, progress documented, and evaluations will occur periodically.

Both adapted lessons and music therapy help the client’s non-musical and musical development. Both approaches are based on the student’s motivation from music and may have an effect on a student’s social development and self concept.

Performance opportunities are available, and although the goals for each child are individualized, we feel that a performance opportunity will build self confidence and satisfaction for our students.

Evaluations

Tempo! Music Therapy provides written reports from evaluation sessions when requested. Please contact our office for more information on this service.

Individual Art Therapy Sessions (inactive)

Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight.

Art therapy integrates the fields of human development, visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms), and the creative process with models of counseling and psychotherapy. Art therapy is used with children, adolescents, adults, older adults, groups, and families to assess and treat the following: anxiety, depression, and other mental and emotional problems and disorders; substance abuse and other addictions; family and relationship issues; abuse and domestic violence; social and emotional difficulties related to disability and illness; trauma and loss; physical, cognitive, and neurological problems; and psychosocial difficulties related to medical illness. Art therapy programs are found in a number of settings including hospitals, clinics, public and community agencies, wellness centers, educational institutions, businesses, and private practices.

Art therapists are masters level professionals who hold a degree in art therapy or a related field. Educational requirements include: theories of art therapy, counseling, and psychotherapy; ethics and standards of practice; assessment and evaluation; individual, group, and family techniques; human and creative development; multicultural issues; research methods; and practicum experiences in clinical, community, and/or other settings. Art therapists are skilled in the application of a variety of art modalities (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media) for assessment and treatment.

Individual Music Therapy

Music therapy sessions typically involve focusing on several instruments and will involve a variety of strategies. Clients will not learn to play the instruments proficiently, but will gain therapeutic goals, set periodically. Sessions can be anywhere from 30-60 minutes and are typically once or twice per week, depending on the individual’s strengths and needs. Please call our office for more information.

Therapeutic Lessons (approx. ages 5+)

Music therapists are trained to provide lessons for clients that focus on therapeutic and musical goals. Therapeutic lessons focus on non-musical goals which may be cognitive, physical, or emotional domains. In therapeutic lessons a client will still learn to play an instrument and will learn musical concepts, but non-musical goals will also be emphasized.

Therapeutic Listening®

Therapeutic Listening® is an evidence- backed protocol that combines a sound-based intervention with sensory integrative activities to create a comprehensive program that is effective for diverse populations with sensory challenges. Therapeutic Listening can impact sensory modulation, attention, behavior, postural organization, and speech and language difficulties. Trained therapists learn to use modulated CDs to set up programs for clients in homes, schools and clinics. Listening is a function of the entire brain; when we listen, we listen with the whole body.

This service is administered by a music therapist formally trained in the Therapeutic Listening® program.

Group Therapy

Group Art Therapy Sessions

Art therapy is the therapeutic use of art techniques within a professional relationship by individuals who experience life challenges. The use of art in clinical treatment provides the individual with a valuable tool which serves as a catalyst for personal change. This creative approach has the potential of increasing inner awareness, decreasing the symptoms of stress and refining cognitive abilities. In the treatment of children and adolescents, the use of art in sessions provides a means of communicating complex emotions in a safe environment while using a developmentally appropriate activity. In as much as each and every individual has his or her own perception and sensibility, art therapy has the ability to fine tune treatment to each person. Therapy sessions are designed with the expressed purpose of providing support and empowerment as well as fun and education.

Group Music Therapy

Our music therapy socialization groups are facilitated by a board certified music therapist (MT-BC) familiar with the concepts of the DIR/Floortime model as well as sensory integrative techniques. The sessions are comprised of no more than 6 children based on age and needs.

Music Explorers (ages 4-8)

In Music Explorers, kids will explore the world of music with a Board Certified Music Therapist familiar with the musical development of children. This group was designed for kids who may have "outgrown" the Music Together program, but continue to demonstrate an interest in music. During the ages of 4-8 parents start to see how the early musical experiences come together to create fun for the child. In this 10-week session, your child will spend 45 minutes each week learning and exploring some fundamental musical concepts through instrument play, dance, singing and creativity in a fun, structured, yet flexible environment.

Summer Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) Camp

In addition to music therapy, clients will also experience art therapy and dance/movement therapy each day. We will have a special class each day which may include yoga, drumming, playing handchimes, and playing the harp. Clients will have the opportunity to play the musical instruments not always available during regular music therapy sessions throughout the school year. Special guests will be invited into work with the participants as well. Goals include socialization and exploration of self through the creative arts.

All clients new to our program will be screened to ensure appropriate group placement. Groupings will consist of approximately
4-6 clients based on needs, abilities, and age. This camp is inclusive and we welcome siblings to join in these camp groups as well.
