Tempo! Music Therapy Services offers Music Together®, an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them. First offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement. Music Together® classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning. In New Jersey, we offer classes in Nutley.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

 

Music Together MIXED AGES™️

​

This is the essential Music Together™️ class, one that a child can attend from birth through age six through all the song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers – grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading young ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers – parents, grandparents, nanny – can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this music making experience.

RHYTHM Kids® by Music Together® 

 

Your four to eight year old is developing quickly and exploring new activities, mastering new skills, and gaining independence. As a parent, you may be making choices about extracurricular activities that complement their new school experiences and support their growth—in music and in life. The Rhythms Kids® by Music Together®  program helps your child take the next step in music development by blending the elements of Music Together that parents and children love with new activities, skills, and challenges that are developmentally appropriate for five- to seven-year-old children. During class, children learn musical skills and appreciation through a special Music Together curriculum developed just for four to eight year olds. Every family enrolled in class receives a Rhythms Kids® by Music Together® edition songbook with activities, two copies of the recording, and weekly Home Play activity pages.

Music Together Within Therapy®

 

This service is facilitated by a board certified music therapist (MT-BC) who utilizes the innovative Music Together music and materials in individual and small group music therapy sessions as well as inclusive music classes. This unique program features a musically rich repertoire that can be adapted to support the individual goals of each client, including  communication (expressive and receptive), physical (fine and gross motor), cognition, sensory and social-emotional goals. The Music Together Within Therapy program can also be implemented in hospitals, schools, child-care settings and community outreach programs.

Music Together® in School

 

Music Together® in School also offers classes designed for preschool settings: Weekly Music Together® Preschool classes are 30-45 minutes long and include an artistically conceived flow of songs, nursery rhymes, instrumental jam sessions, fingerplays, and movement activities. The combination and types of activities are research-based and support children’s developing competence in tonality and rhythm.

 

In addition, activities evolve from the child’s world and include vocal play, animal sounds, rhythm play, language play, and a good bit of genuine, silly fun. Classes are taught by a registered Music Together® teacher who is trained in music development and skilled in leading participatory music activity. Music Together GENERATIONS™️ Classes

 

Across the country and abroad, in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and senior residences, elders are forming bonds with young families through Music Together®. Typically, area Music Together® teachers arrange to hold a parent-child class in a facility, with the express purpose of sharing music with the elders.

 

Outreach Programs

 

Tempo! participates in Music Together® outreach programs in the community, including preschools, community centers, and other locations. Many of these programs are grant- funded. Feel free to contact us info@tempotherapy.com for more information on local outreach programs.

 

A word about inclusion . . .

 

All of our Music Together® classes are inclusive, meaning there may be families attending with a child with special needs in any of our classes. We want our classes to be fun and accessible to all families. This allows families to attend classes together and for siblings to interact in a playful, musical environment. We welcome helpers and aides to attend and support families as well. Typically developing children have fun engaging with all children in the class, and we have received positive feedback from many families about our inclusion model. If at any point it is determined that the class is not a right fit for a child or if there are safety concerns, we may provide alternate options. This does not mean that Music Together® is not a good fit overall, and often children are able to rejoin the class. If at any point you have questions about our inclusive policies, please contact us!
